Via NYT: The world of extreme poverty and disease that characterized life for most people throughout history may now finally be on its way out.
As recently as 1980, a slight majority of people in the developing world lived in extreme poverty -- surviving on less than $1.25 in today's money. Today, that number has dropped to just 1 in 5, according to the World Bank, and there's a huge push to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030. So even as we acknowledge that there's plenty of work remaining, let's also celebrate this triumph for humanity, Nicholas Kristof writes. Read more: http://nyti.ms/169MhuU
For generations, a vast majority have lived brief, illiterate lives marked by disease, disability and the loss of children. As recently as 1980, a slight majority of the world’s people lived in extreme poverty, defined as surviving on less than $1.25 in today’s money. Yet in a time of depressing news worldwide, here’s one area of spectacular progress. The share of the world’s people living in extreme poverty has been reduced from 1 in 2 in 1980 to 1 in 5 today, according to the World Bank.
A Way of Life Is Ending. Thank Goodness. - on achievements in the MDGs! "There will still be poverty, of course, just as there is far too much poverty lingering in America. But the extreme hanging-by-your-fingernails subsistence in a thatch-roof hut, your children uneducated and dying — that will go from typical to essentially nonexistent just in the course of my adult life." When child mortality drops & families know that their kids will survive, they have less & invest more in their children.

Global levels of education
Here’s a fresh take on a complex set of data. What if you took all the statistics about everyone in the world and boiled it all down into one question: what if the world was just 100 people? What if you took the billions and billions of people on Earth and made it so only 100 people could represent them? You’d get some super-simplified but interesting stats, that’s for sure.
A view global statistics if the population of the world was 100 people.

This infographic gives information about what life is like for girls in developing countries.
The Life of a #Girl in the Developing World (source: infographic, The Hunger Project)
Being a young girl can differ depending on where you live. If you were to live in a developing country it would be a lot harder, than living in a first world country (as shown by the data in the image attached). Where you live can give you many opportunities as a young person growing up. If you were to grow up and live in a ‘rich’ area of Australia, you would be presented with so many more options and life would be a lot easier than if you were to live in a poorer part of the world. It is interesting that location can be very important as it is a lot harder to work yourself up from living in a ‘poorer’ background as you need to build skills or learn new things that you are not used to because of the location you were brought up or live in.
