Large vegetable ivory nut button. This is a handmade, lathe turned button made of ivory palm nut. It is slightly domed with a 13 mm glass jewel set into the center. It shows foiled lavender from the top and clear from the side. Base is rich, creamy carmel with 2 random spots of dark inner grain on one side from natural variations in the seed. There is a carved peg shank on the back. Large focal button: 1 & 3/8" (39 mm). New and unused but there is a blotchy spot in the foil behind the glass.. The seed, (Metroxylon Amicarum) comes from the island of Pohnpei in the western Pacific Ocean, northwest of Australia. A renewable rain forest material. Wonderful embellishment for fiber art wear, hat decorations. From my button stash. I had several, used a few and this is a leftover. Recently produced by a man in California. I think he outsources the carving to local people on the island and then adds various decorations. The last photo shows several 'raw' seeds and samles of other items made with the material.
