It is to celebrate the Hindu religious defeat of evil by their god. It is also to thank their god and celebrate the arrival of spring - the harvest-vegetables season, as a majority of hindus are vegetarians.

kromtaal: Close Shave, by Arkamitra Roy. Barber in Varanasi, India. The mad ghats of Benaras or Varanasi as it is now called. Teeming with life, chaos, colour, death, religion, superstition and absolute belief. But in the midst of everything, daily mundane activities are carried out, like a quick shave and haircut. In a corner of the iconic Dasashwamedh Ghat, outside a brightly coloured temple, the barber has set up a very basic shop. The colours are eye-catching to say the least.

Holi Festival, India.
The Holi Festival is the festival of colors. The legend of Holi is that the colorful Indian God, Lord Krishna was jealous that Radha had a fair complexion. Krishna complained to his mother about this and she said to apply color to Radha's face and change the complexion according to his choice. The game be came so popular that it turned into a tradition; and later, a festival.
