Blue Moon (2015-07-31) over state capitol, Sacramento CA. It was the second full Moon in July. When the Moon is low in the sky you often get a red or orange color. (Credit: David Yu) Mona Evans, "Once in a Blue Moon" www.bellaonline.c...

Youngest new moon every photographed. (Credit: Thierry Legault) 2013-07-08. July 2013 Moon caught at the instant it was new, most nearly between the Earth and the Sun for that lunar orbit. Irregularities “are caused by the relief at the edge of the lunar disk”.

"Earthshine" written by Neil Peart, Geddy Lee Weinrib, Alex Lifeson. It's on the album Vapor Trails (2002) by Rush. "On certain nights When the angles are right And the moon is a slender crescent . . ." Mona Evans, "Earthshine" www.bellaonline.c...

What is earthshine? We can sometimes see a crescent Moon along with the night side of the Moon. The bright crescent is sunlight reflected off the Moon's dayside (moonshine). But Earth also reflects sunlight (earthshine), and in this case the light hits the Moon and dimly lights its night side.

Moon lit by earthshine. The camera on NASA's 1994 lunar-prospecting Clementine spacecraft reveals (from right to left) the Moon lit by earthshine, the Sun's glare rising over the Moon's dark limb, and the planets Saturn, Mars and Mercury (the three dots at lower left).

These are all photos of the Moon but photographed in a variety of different wavelengths of light. The images are arranged from longest to shortest wavelength. Top row from left: Moon in radio waves, submillimeter light, mid-infrared, near-infrared. Bottom row: Visual, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Lunar crater C. Herschel. It's a small crater named after Caroline Herschel, lying on on a wrinkle ridge of the lunar mare named the Dorsum Heim, which is in the western part of Mare Imbrium. It's a circular, bowl-shaped formation that has not undergone significant erosion. The interior floor has the same low albedo as the surrounding lunar mare. If the Moon did NOT rotate, we would be able to see all its sides, gradually, as we proceeded through the month. Mona Evans, "Teaching Moon Phases and Eclipses" www.bellaonline.c...

Crescent moon and Coit Tower, San Francisco. Beautiful photo by David Yu, taken 2014-10-27. One of my favorite places.

Sunrise view of Tycho crater. The summit of the central peak is 2 km (6562 ft) above the crater floor which is about 4700 m (15,420 ft) below the rim. Tycho's features are steep and sharp because the crater is young by lunar standards, only about 110 million years old. Over time, micrometeorites, and not so micro meteorites, will grind and erode these steep slopes into smooth mountains. Clerke Crater - named for 19th century Irish astronomer & writer Agnes Mary Clerke. The crater's interior wall has many distinct flows of granular material which narrow as they reach towards the crater floor. The debris appear more reflective than the rest of the crater wall, but it's not certain why. The crater located near the Taurus Littrow Valley where Apollo 17 landed in December 1972. 50 Amazing Facts About the Moon. This is an amusing infographic and generally accurate - but I think a few things are a bit iffy. Mona Evans, "Moon Madness" www.bellaonline.c...

The difference in apparent size between the largest and smallest Full Moon is quite dramatic and similar to this side by side comparison of the lunar apogee/perigee apparitions from 2006. But seen in the sky many months apart, the change is difficult to notice. Mona Evans, "What Is a Supermoon?" www.bellaonline.c...

1st 360 Degree Color Panorama from China’s Chang’e-3 Lunar Lander. It shows the moonscape view all around the landing site after the ‘Yutu’ lunar rover left impressive tracks behind when it initially rolled onto the lunar terrain on Dec. 15, 2013. The Moon. (I can't find a credit line for these photos.) Note: The picture apparently showing a very large crescent Moon in an inverted bow above a setting Sun is an artistic image - not a real picture. It couldn't happen. Mona Evans, "The Moon - Earth's Daughter" www.bellaonline.c...

Chang’e 3 landing site in Sinus Iridum, the Bay of Rainbows. Also labeled is the crater named for Francesco Bianchini (18th century Italian astronomers) and crater Helicon (a sacred mountain in Greek mythology). Promontories honor Pierre-Simon Laplace (18th-19 century French astronomer and mathematician) and Heraclides Ponticus (Greek astronomer 4th century BCE). Mare Imbrium is the Sea of Showers. The thickness of the moon’s crust as calculated by NASA’s GRAIL mission. The near side is on the left-hand side of the picture, and the far side on the right. The near side has a thinner crust and bigger craters than the far side. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/S. Miljkovic) Mona Evans, "The Moon - Earth's Daughter", www.bellaonline.c...

"The Waxing Crescent Moon" by Jacob Marchio (age 14). Highly commended in the Young Astronomy Photographer category. The image was taken three days after the new Moon. Mona Evans, "Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2013" www.bellaonline.c...

First ever look at the far side of the Moon. The photo was taken by the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 on Oct. 7, 1959. The right three-quarters of the disk is the far side. A = Mare Moscoviense, B = Tsiolkovsky Crater with central peak, C = Mare Smythii (on the near side-far side border) and D = Mare Crisium (near side). A genuinely blue Moon over Watauga, Texas on 2003-10-30. (Photo credit: Tom King) The rare coloring was probably from tiny water droplets in the atmosphere which were the right size for this unusual filtering effect. Mona Evans, "Once in a Blue Moon" www.bellaonline.c...

Blue moon - infographic. Good, but it doesn't mention how the Moon can genuinely appear to be blue. Mona Evans, "Once in a Blue Moon" www.bellaonline.c...
