What is earthshine? We can sometimes see a crescent Moon along with the night side of the Moon. The bright crescent is sunlight reflected off the Moon's dayside (moonshine). But Earth also reflects sunlight (earthshine), and in this case the light hits the Moon and dimly lights its night side.

Moon lit by earthshine. The camera on NASA's 1994 lunar-prospecting Clementine spacecraft reveals (from right to left) the Moon lit by earthshine, the Sun's glare rising over the Moon's dark limb, and the planets Saturn, Mars and Mercury (the three dots at lower left).

The Plane of the Ecliptic is shown in this camera image which reveals the Moon lit by Earthshine, the Sun's corona rising over the Moon's dark limb, and the planets Saturn, Mars, and Mercury. The ecliptic plane is defined as the imaginary plane containing the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Image Credit: NASA

Lunar crater C. Herschel. It's a small crater named after Caroline Herschel, lying on on a wrinkle ridge of the lunar mare named the Dorsum Heim, which is in the western part of Mare Imbrium. It's a circular, bowl-shaped formation that has not undergone significant erosion. The interior floor has the same low albedo as the surrounding lunar mare. Sunrise view of Tycho crater. The summit of the central peak is 2 km (6562 ft) above the crater floor which is about 4700 m (15,420 ft) below the rim. Tycho's features are steep and sharp because the crater is young by lunar standards, only about 110 million years old. Over time, micrometeorites, and not so micro meteorites, will grind and erode these steep slopes into smooth mountains. Shadows on the MoonCredit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center/Arizona State UniversityWednesday, July 6, 2011: On June 10, 2011, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter angled its orbit 65° to the west, allowing the spacecraft's cameras to capture a sunrise view of the moon's Tycho crater. Tycho is located at 43.37°S, 348.68°E, and is about 51 miles (82 kilometers) in diameter. The summit of the central peak is 1.24 miles (2 kilometers) above the crater floor. The distance from Tycho's floor to its rim is about 2.92 miles (4.7 kilometers). Tycho crater's central peak complex, shown here, is about 9.3 miles (15 km) wide, left to right (southeast to northwest in this view).
View of Tycho Central Peak The public was asked to select a favorite Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter image of the moon for the cover of a special image collection. After two weeks of voting, the public has selected this image of Tycho Central Peak as its favorite moon image. The stunningly beautiful Tycho Central Peak rests inside an impact crater and has a boulder over 100 meters wide (about 328 feet) at its summit. It showcases a breathtaking view of the lunar landscape.
Clerke Crater - named for 19th century Irish astronomer & writer Agnes Mary Clerke. The crater's interior wall has many distinct flows of granular material which narrow as they reach towards the crater floor. The debris appear more reflective than the rest of the crater wall, but it's not certain why. The crater located near the Taurus Littrow Valley where Apollo 17 landed in December 1972. This image is a 360-degree panorama of the Chang'e-3, Yutu Rover landing site created by Ken Kremer and Marco Di Lorenzo. It was stitched from six individual pictures released to a state-run China news outlet. The initial panoramic was then enhanced to improve contrast, lighting and uniformity, which revealed more detail.

Dark side of the moon The moon is a familiar sight – at least, the face permanently turned towards Earth is. In 1959, the Soviet Luna-3 probe gave us a new perspective when it sent back this grainy picture of the lunar far side. It looks different from the near side as the crust here is harder and cooler. Subsequent missions have discovered an abundance of water located at the moon's poles. (Image: National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) Photo Gallery)
