SSRIs And Birth Defects---Research shows that there is an increased risk of birth defects when women take the antidepressant SSRIs during pregnancy. Some of the effects that has been linked to the medication are persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn, heart defects, respiratory distress, anencephaly, and cleft lip. There is a 60% increased risk of heart defects on the infant if the mother takes SSRIs during the first trimester.
