The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is a story about a girl in WWII Germany who steals books before they can be burned and shares them with her neighbors and a Jewish man who is hidden in her basement. The story is narrated by Death and is appropriately dark, but manages to be uplifting at the same time. This is a very well written book.
