From Portraits of Women by Ikenaga Yasunari. These are really awesome works by a modern Japanese painter. I love the echo of traditionalism with a more modern naturalism/realism. The colors are very true to the historic paintings - as is the beautifully detailed pattern-work. The compositions reflect the beautiful simplicity of the traditional portraiture.

Mary Pratt, one of my favourite Canadian painters - her paintings of vegetables, fruit (and meat) glow. How do they do it?

Geoff Slater (New Brunswick, Canada) makes quite beautiful one-line paintings. He says: "Fundamentally and spiritually, the line represents a certain connectedness - a thread that ties objects and individuals together. Water, trees, land and man-made structures are all linked together... Although the line changes colour, it never touches, or crosses itself"
