Calming Jar- Take a break until the sparkles settle (positive time out). with my luck, the kids would open the jar while taking their break. :P

A calming jar is a unique way to get your kids to calm down in time out, while being distracted. All you need is a jar, some sand, and food coloring!

Calming Jar- Tell the child that he/she needs a break and may return when everything has settled to the bottom of the jar. Perfect - fill up a pint jar with water, 1 drop of food coloring and some glitter. I have whichever kid is "doing time" shake the bottle and watch it settle. Once the glitter has settled, they've had time to calm down and talk about their problem. It's quite soothing actually

Calming jar-tell child that they need a break and may come back when everything has settled to the bottom - I think I love this idea... Better than a simple time out for temper tantrums.
