Limacina helicina, the sea butterfly, is a tiny mollusk that lives inside a dark shell and uses its "ears" as wings. Like its predator, the sea angel, Limacina has evolved wings in place of the normal mollusk foot. Unlike the sea angel, though, Limacina hunts with a big ball of secreted mucous, which it uses to catch tiny arthropods, bacteria and algae. Photo by Alexander Semenov. The Lion's Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before the dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world. The largest can come in at about 6 metres and has tentacles over 50 metres long. They have hundreds of poisonous tentacles that are used to catch fish passing by. (Via Brooklyn Mutt)
