"By filling a west facing window with water-filled clear bottles you can seriously reduce heat-gain in your house this summer (ie, less air conditioning). The water absorbs the heat rather than letting it pass into your home and then releases it in the evening when temperatures are not as high." @Kim Denny

You build shelves across your windows and line them with glass bottles. Suggested fillers include grasses, plants, stones, food coloring (COOL). And it helps keep your room cool in the summer. How to add bump-safety for kids ... a rail?

As the last gasps of summer exhaled collar-loosening heat onto LA, it became apparent I needed to get away 120 miles south to temperate San Diego for a weekend getaway (summer here unofficially continues well throughout October). It was while waiting for our hotel room in San Diego that I noticed an impressive vertical indoor garden in the lobby that at first glance seemed composed of fake plants, so vibrant green was the color. I was able to get a few details about the setup and tips for how to make your own vertical garden at home for indoor or outdoor use.

Making a Fragrant Fire Starter To make an aromatic herb fire starter, gather old newspaper and an assortment of herbs. Sage, basil and rosemary work well; experiment with your favorites. Wrap the herbs in a sheet of newspaper and secure the ends with raffia or cotton twine. As you pile the logs, tuck a few of the herb bundles underneath, allowing the newspaper ends to stick out. Then light the paper ends to start the fire.

The Best Way to Preserve Herbs: Organic Gardening. Freezing herbs in oil or butter.
Herbs All Year - The best way to preserve herbs is to freeze them in oil or butter. Packed in flat, thin layers in heavy-duty zip-top bags, frozen herb butters and oils are easy to store. Use herbs preserved in oil the same way as fresh herbs. | Organic Gardening
The Best Way to Preserve Herbs: Organic Gardening. How to Preserve Fresh Herbs in Oil or Butter Wash herbs, discarding stems and damaged leaves. Spin leaves dry in a salad spinner or dry well with paper towels. Place herbs in food processor with 1/3 cup olive oil for every 2 cups leaves, or 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick) per 2 to 4 tablespoons leaves. For butters, add grated citrus rind, ginger, or garlic for extra flavor. To make sure herb oils are adaptable to a wide variety of uses, don’t add cheese or nuts. Pulse processor, scraping down sides of bowl from time to time, until you get a chunky paste and all leaves are chopped. To package for freezing, put 1 cup herb oil or 1/2 cup herb butter in a 1-quart zip-top bag, then flatten and spread mixture to make a thin layer. Freeze flat. Best used within 6 months.
