"Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States)" by James M. McPherson (on my favorite history book list)
Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era Pulitzer-winning nonfiction history gives the best single-volume account of the American Civil War available.
Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States) [Paperback] James M. McPherson (Author),952 pages Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (December 11, 2003)
Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States) (Paperback)By James M. McPherson
Battle Cry of Freedom - Long read, but more than likely the best book ever written on understanding the Civil War
Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States): James M. McPherson: 9780195168952: Amazon.com: Books
Filled with fresh interpretations and information, puncturing old myths and challenging new ones, Battle Cry of Freedom will unquestionably become the standard one-volume history of the Civil War. James McPherson's fast-paced narrative fully integrates the political, social, and military events that crowded the two decades from the outbreak of one war in Mexico to the ending of another at Appomattox.

Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae: Steven Pressfield: 9780553383683: Amazon.com: Books
Historical nonfiction about the last stand of the spartans in the Thermopylae pass... if you're going to read a story about badasses in war, this book should be on the standard reading list
Gates of Fire. It's about the 300 Spartan warriors and their courage to fight Xerxes and his armies. In other words, the true Original Gangsters.
Gates of Fire loved it! It's about the 300 Spartan warriors and their courage to fight Xerxes and his armies.
Gates of Fire. Read this my senior year of high school and loved it! It's about the 300 Spartan warriors and their courage to fight Xerxes and his armies.
Gates of Fire. My absolute favorite book of all time since I had the pleasure of first reading it in March 2002.
300 Spartan warriors held the pass at Thermopylae. This self sacrifice eventually led to the defeat of the Persian army.
Gates of Fire is one of the best books I have every had the pleasure to read; hands down! It is based off of historical knowledge or the battle of Thermopile and the 300 spartan warriors lead by King Leonidas. It makes 300 look like a kids movie. Although it is written as a novel the historical accuracy is somewhat on point. I had a battalion commander that "strongly" recommended it to all of the officers and NCO's.
Favorite Book of ALL TIME. Every military wife should read it.

I very rarely grew attached to the books I was forced to read in high school, but this is, by far, one of my favorite books. So far I've read it twice, and I plan to crack it open again this year.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I 'stole' (read as: checked out and never returned then Paid the fee so I could graduate") from our high school library. Read it while getting my WASP tan on between my junior and senior year. Fell in love with the Bronte sisters. Can read this again and again.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Obsessive love story long before the Twilight series. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger. the-librarian-s-list-all-time-favorite-books
Although a teacher made me read Jane Eyre in high school English, it was Wuthering Heights by another Bronte sister that I read of my own free will, and more than once.
All time favorite book and movie. I cry every time. Just watched it on Netflix recently. again :) A Deana favorite www.adealwithGodbook.com

For Whom the Bell Tolls. Ernest Hemingway. First edition, 1940, Charles Scribner’s Sons. War novel. American in the International Brigades is attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. “Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.” (Hemingway). One of my favorite books.
For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway, 1940 - Shortly after its publication the U.S. Post Office, which purpose was in part to monitor and censor distribution of media and texts, declared the book nonmailable. In the 1970s, eight Turkish booksellers were tried for “spreading propaganda unfavorable to the state” because they had published and distributed the text. #bannedbooks

First Hemingway book I read that got me hooked on him. "There is only now and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion. This is how you live a life in two days. And if you stop complaining and asking for what you will never get, you will have a good life." - Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls
