Thelonious Monk's List of Tips. “Don’t play everything (or every time); let some things go by. Some music just imagined. What you don’t play can be more important than what you do.” “Don’t play the piano part. I’m playing that. Don’t listen to me. I’m supposed to be accompanying you!” "They tried to get me to hate white people, but someone would always come along and spoil it."

Thelonious Monk's advice to Musicians... Don't play everything... and other words of wisdom...
Just Because you're not a drummer, doesn't mean you don't need to keep time - Thelonious Monk. Transcribed by soprano sax player Steve Lacy in a spiral-bound notebook, Thelonious Monk created a primer of do’s and don’ts for club musicians.
Thelonius Monk's advice for musicians
Thelonious Monk's memo to self - begins with: "Just because you aren't the drummer, doesn't mean you don't have to keep time," And ends with - "They tried to get me to hate white people, but someone would always come along and spoil it."
Steve Lacy played soprano sax in Thelonious Monk's quintet for 16 weeks in 1960. He took down Monk's advice in a spiral notebook; here's a page or two.

He was cool and sleek as he blew on the saxophone by one of the most famous musicians ever, like nothing was actually happening. But his career was taking off I was slowing falling deeply, madly in love with him with every passing note. -ELN

This is the sort of anti racism material I like to see, precisely because it isn't trying to guide you or constructed for that purpose. Two people interested in something higher than narrow selfishness or money making and not caring or seeing the colour of each other's skin. Can intelligent people really believe skin colour makes you superior or inferior? - should you not know it's Jazz musicians and composers Miles Davis and Bill Evans
