Bad ways to start a novel (Part 3). 10). Geography - If I had wanted to know that Granard was in the midlands and had 1200 inhabitants, I would have bought an atlas. I wanted to read about people doing interesting things. 11). Chapter One - What? Where else would you start? According to every publisher and agent, most novels really start on chapter 3 or 4. The first few chapters are all set-up, or backstory which would improve the novel by being deleted. 12). Alarm Clock - Possibly the worst ope

Can you guys help? I need to know how many good books that you have read / if these ARE bad ways to start a book. ------- Weather. Describing an average day in the life of your character. Backstory. Voiceovers to the reader. Flashback. Dialogue. Prologue. Philosophy. Dreams. Geography. Chapter one. Alarm clock.
I liked this article, particularly the comments on "Dreams" ("You know how boring it is when your friends tell you their dreams?") and "The Alarm Clock."
Weather. Average day. Backstory. Voiceovers. Flashback. Dialogue. Prologue. Philosophy. Dreams. Geography. Chapter one. Alarm clock.
Bad ways to start a novel (Of course, a good writer can break most of these "rules" to wonderful effect.)
Weather. Describing an average day in the life of your character. Backstory. Voiceovers to the reader. Flashback. Dialogue. Prologue. Philosophy. Dreams. Geography. Chapter one. Alarm clock. Claire: I disagree! - and I think a 'good writer' could make them all work. 'A Kestrel For A Knave' by Barry Hines (made into the fabulous film 'Kes') begins with the alarm clock going off. I LOVED that book - and the film.
They have a point- but I also think if everyone reads this and writes using its advice, the major things they tell us to avoid when starting a story will become welcomed because they won't be common openings anymore: there's my rant. Enjoy. Weather. Describing an average day in the life of your character. Backstory. Voiceovers to the reader. Flashback. Dialogue. Prologue. Philosophy. Dreams. Geography. Chapter one. Alarm clock.
Weather. Describing an average day in the life of your character. Backstory. Voiceovers to the reader. Flashback. Dialogue. Prologue. Philosophy. Dreams. Geography. Chapter one. Alarm clock. <<<I find nothing wrong with a prologue - as long as it works for the story and takes place years prior to the events of the initial novel. I also don't mind the average day or backstory - as long as it's SHORT. Like, a couple sentences and then action. That can really make a story pop.

This is exactly how I write a book. I start with only the germ of an idea and let the story grow from there. First drafts are all about discovering what the story is.
This needs to be my new mantra for writing. I always think of a million ideas, but then I don't know what to do with them, so I never write them down!
I always have no clue what I'm going to write about. But if you start writing the ideas can just flow out.
My friends think I'm crazy. "How do you write something without knowing half the story?" The idea will come. They always do.
Well that's good, because more than half the time I have no clue where I'm going with my scattered ideas. :3
It's like a thousand ideas are going through my head.... writers have it hard, man.
