When Margarete Steiff (1847-1909) was 18 months she had a high fever which paralysed her legs and it hurt to use her right arm. In spite of the pain in her right hand, Margarete also went to sewing school and at the age of 17 she completed her training as a seamstress. Her father built her a small tailor shop. She sold clothes and articles she made. She found a pattern for a stuffed elephant, and that started the Steiff Toy Co. still high quality goods.
