Mount Desert Rock is one of the most isolated and desolate places ever used for a lighthouse. Located off the shore of Maine, twenty-six miles from the nearest harbor, the rocky islet is only 600 yards long and 200 yards wide, and its highest point is only twenty feet above the sea at low tide. During storms, the entire island is submerged by the waves. It was a true test of endurance to be a keeper there.
One of the prettiest spots in Maine is Bug Light Park in South Portlandoverlooking Portland Harbor with stunning views of the city skyline. The centerpiece of the park is this little gem, built in 1875 in a beautiful Greek architectural style. At only 26 feet tall, the Portland Breakwater Light is affectionately called "Bug" Photo By Benjamin Williamson
