Prince George, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary. (1902-1942). He was killed in an airplane crash in Scotland while on active duty with the Royal Air Force. He is the father of Princes Edward and Michael, and Princess Alexandra.

King George V. Anti-German sentiment during WWI caused him to change dynasty name from Saxe-Coburg Gotha to the House of Windsor. Older brother Prince Albert was in line for the throne, but died of pneumonia. George became successor and married his brother's fiance, Mary of Teck. Upon his death, his son Edward ascended the throne but later abdicated in favor of his relationship with American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. On that day "Bertie" became HM King George VI.

George VI was a genuinely shy but energetic monarch, a good shot, and an honest and faithful king. Supported by a loving wife, Queen Elizabeth, and his daughters, he served at the forefront of Britain's struggle to defeat Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
