UGOLINO AND HIS SONS - sculpted 1865–67 by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875), Metropolitan Museum of Art. The very first time I saw this sculpture in NYC, I was totally blown away. Ugolino della Gherardesca was an Italian nobleman, politician and naval commander who was accused of treason. In Dante's Inferno, he is placed in the the second ring of the lowest circle where he and his sons are left to starve to death. This sculpture depicts him gnawing his fingers in grief.
