Leveraging Customer Purchase and Loyalty Data Proves Challenging JUNE 6, 2012 Marketers adept at making sense of customer profile and campaign data
The majority of marketers worldwide (65%) used customer profile data to enhance their marketing programs. Social media data and marketing campaign response and engagement data were also used by 61% and 51% of respondents, respectively.

Interestingly, marketers most often said they measured the success of their social media sponsorship campaigns through criteria that were difficult, if not impossible, to quantify. More than eight in 10 marketers said they thought quality of content was an important factor in measuring success, while three-quarters cited the importance of sentiment.

Marketers are drawing down emphasis on Facebook, increasing budgets and time spent attending to the rest of the web
In a June 2012 study from social marketing analytics company 33Across, 4% of US brand marketers and agencies spent equal amounts of time attending to Facebook and the rest of the internet. This was down from 16% who said the same in March 2012. More common were respondents who spent more time thinking about the rest of the web than they did Facebook. In June, 71% of respondents said they spent 20% of their time attending to Facebook and 80% looking after the rest of the internet.

Advertising Age and Citigroup spoke to US marketers in June 2012 and found that half of them (49.5%) said their company spent between 1% and 10% of their marketing budget on social media. An additional 19.0% spent between 11% and 20% and nearly one-tenth (9.7%) set aside nothing out of their marketing budget for social.

When it comes to the types of risk social media sites pose, reputation or damage to the brand was the top concern. Of respondents to Altimeter’s survey, 66% said reputational damage to the brand was a critical or significant risk. The next biggest concern was the release of confidential information, which 32% of respondents said was a significant or critical risk.
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the social sites used by the most people and therefore possessing the greatest reach, each have their hazards. Twitter allows users to easily @Jacqueline Mention a brand, drawing attention from company observers. But Twitter posts also spread very quickly, and users can easily retweet a comment or post without checking its validity, allowing a crisis to explode across the service.

Respondents were most likely to tell Econsultancy and Adobe that they were using social media as a brand awareness channel, with more than six in 10 agencies and companies indicating this. Even so, failing to measure beyond soft metrics can only bring a limited understanding of how social media might be affecting brand awareness. The companies surveyed were most likely to be active on Facebook and Twitter (86% each), followed by YouTube and LinkedIn.
