Honolulu by Alan Brennert. He is a fantastic writer, he created a strong heroin with a lot of depth and you get to learn quite a bit of history while reading it (not in a boring way) I especially love how his characters faced difficult circumstance but they never wallowed in it, instead fought for better futures and overcame.

Not only did they survive, but prospered as entrepreneurs and built a foundation on which Afghanistan has begun to rebuild itself since the Taliban lost their control over the government. Very inspiring!
