Vintage Photography: Luzon Woman c.1870-1914 - Beautiful Photo and Beautiful Woman
Beautiful Native American Woman. I pinned this because this girl is so naturally beautiful
Exotic Beauty circa 1875 -- this unknown young woman was photographed in the Philippines by Dutch photographer Francisco Van Camp in 1875. The photograph’s inscription describes her as Mestiza Sangley-Filipina. Fresh-faced and all-natural with her hair flowing wildly, this black and white portrait is worlds away from the Victorian photography we normally see. What a beauty.

Southworth and Hawes of Boston (Albert Sands Southworth 1811-94 and Josiah Johnson Hawes, 1808-1901): A Daguerreotype (quarter plate) of Harriet Beecher Stowe, c. 1843-45.
Harriet Beecher, Uncle Toms, Beecher Stowe, American Author, Toms Cabin, Sands Southworth, Art History, Albert Sands, The Civil War
Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1850s- a woman known for the power of her literary voice, and for her passionate espousal of abolition. This quarter-plate daguerreotype of the American author Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) was probably made around the time of the publication of her influential novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852). The enormously successful book, which the deeply religious Stowe maintained was the result of a vision from God, was instrumental in focusing antislavery sentiment in the North prior to the Civil War. "Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes: Harriet Beecher Stowe (37.14.40)". In Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art”
Harriet Beecher Stowe - by Albert Sands Southworth. 1850's. Her book Uncle Tom's Cabin really stirred up the Civil War.

1800s Portrait of three women featured in the book The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious by W.M. Hunt. The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious presents a wonderfully idiosyncratic and compelling collection of photographs assembled around a particular theme: in each image, the gaze of the subject is averted, the face obscured or the eyes firmly closed. Girl. Between 1860 and 1870. What a face. She looks like a character in a story that I'd like to write, but haven't thought of, yet. I would imagine that someone with so much spunk and defiance in her gaze would've lived life on her own terms, but that's wishful imagining, I know. I think it's sweet that her hair is imperfectly done.

Samurai with fan katana - 1866... Notice the fan? Most people lived on the coast of Japan. In the summer, it was hot, humid, and very buggy. Fans kept people cool. They also made excellent weapons when the ribs were made of tempered steel! 'Warrior fans' could weigh 1kg (2lbs.) or more. Using them was an excellent workout for the forearms, and kept you safe.
