"Sunken" Raised Garden Bed. By digging down instead of building up the pathway dirt can be added to garden beds. Downfall needs drainage during wet months. Plus side, it makes a more attractive raised garden as it blends into the yard. While beds are 12" deep, they are only 4-6" above ground.
Time your crops. Soil temperatures matter as much as air temperature when you're planting. Even peas, which are spring crops that are resistant to light frost once they're growing, won't germinate when the soil is below 39 degrees.
