Feb 03, 1959.... rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorehead, Minnesota. The Cuban missile crisis was a 14-day confrontation in October, 1962, between the Soviet Union & Cuba & the U.S. The crisis is regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict & is the first documented instance of mutual assured destruction (MAD) being discussed as a determining factor in a major international arms agreement. The confrontation ended on 10/28/1962, when Kennedy & UN Secretary-General U Thant reached an agreement with Khrushchev.
Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first humans on the Moon, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on July 20, 1969, at 20:18 UTC. Armstrong became the first to step onto the lunar surface 6 hours later on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. Armstrong spent about two and a half hours outside the spacecraft, Aldrin slightly less; and together they collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material for return to Earth
