Alfred Hitchcock director - King of lighting, suspense and setting the creepiest mood without showing a thing. He also had quite a sense of humor about himself ;)
Alfred Hitchcock His was a character ... I have heard that he would talk about gruesome topics while riding in an elevator full of people. Just to get their reactions. Not sure a fact but I wouldn't put it past him. ;-D

Alfred HITCHCOCK: The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). This film was less slick than the 60's remake. However, Hitchcock duplicated much of the film shot-for-shot in the new version.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) is a British suspense film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, featuring Peter Lorre, and released by Gaumont British. It was one of the most successful and critically acclaimed films of Hitchcock's British period. Hitchcock remade the film with James Stewart and Doris Day in 1956 for Paramount Pictures. The two films are, however, very different in tone, in setting, and in many plot details.

"I'm flattered when people say that I'm influenced by Chekhov, and indeed I am, and indeed I would love to be as great a dramatist, but my work bears a greater debt to Alfred Hitchcock--to name only one film director--than it does to Chekhov. I was created by people like Ford and Lubitsch and de Mille and Vidor and Griffith and Stevens long before I ever read a play. I'm a movie man."-Tennessee Williams/Interview with James Grissom/Photo of Hitchcock by Bob Willoughby, on the set of "Marnie"/

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English film director and producer. He pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema in both silent films and early talkies, billed as England's best director, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939.

Alfred Hitchcock had a vacant cast chair marked “Mrs. Bates” placed eerily on the set of his 1960 “Psycho” throughout shooting, and even falsely reported to the press that he was auditioning for the role of Mrs. Bates to further add to the mystery around the film.
Hitchcock staged seemingly impromptu press photos while on set, with a prominently-situated director’s chair with “Mrs. Bates” written on the back. Hitchcock would be photographed in that chair, along with every major cast member, from Janet Leigh to Martin Balsam (Detective Arbogast) -- every cast member, that is, except Anthony Perkins.
