Lion's Rock, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka; During King Kashyapa’s reign (477 to 495), Sigiriya was developed into a complex city and fortress. Most of the elaborate constructions, including defensive structures, palaces, and gardens, date back to this period. After Kashyapa's overthrow, it became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. It was abandoned until the 16th and 17th centuries, and abandoned again after that; 're-discovered' in 1831; photo by Bernard Gagnon
