I love today's "Photo of the Day." It's of the 1973-74 freshmen along with Bob Johnson. Five out of seven NHL draft picks, three NHL players, three guys named Dave, one current NHL broadcaster, and one currently the VP of Hockey Operations for the Anaheim Ducks. I don't know what the rest are doing these days. Anyone? Back Row - L to R: Dave Lundeen, Dave Otness, Bob Johnson, Pete Scamurra, Steve Clippingdale, Jim Jefferies. Front - Goalie Dave McNab, Brian Engblom.
If today were May 25, 1994, today's "Photo of the Day" would feature Mike Richter, a very important person in the NHL that day. Why? Because the former Badger was the goalie for the New York Rangers, who trailed the New Jersey Devils three games to two in the NHL's Eastern Conference finals and had a game in New Jersey to try to tie the series.
Gordie Howe tries to sneak a shot past Joe Daley during a 1971 Sabres-Red Wings game. (Walter Iooss Jr./SI) There's so much to look at in this photo: the crowd, how dingy the rink looks, that the players wear no upper-body padding, the goalie wears no mask.
USA goalie Jim Craig (30) and defenseman Ken Morrow (3) defend the net during the team’s 1980 medal-round game against the USSR, which was played 32 years ago today. The U.S. pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history with a 4-3 victory and would go onto defeat Finland in the gold medal game and complete the “Miracle on Ice.” (Heinz Kluetmeier/SI) GALLERY: Photos of the Miracle on Ice | Greatest Upsets In Sports History SI VAULT: U.S. Hockey squad wins SI Sportsman
