Wild and wonderful, the Aran Islands are home to a special and rare way of life. Off the west coast of Galway, these three rocky outliers of Inis Mór, Inis Oírr, and Inis Meáin are home to 1,200 people – although numbers have dwindled steadily since the 19th century. The islands are known as a Gaeltacht region, meaning inhabitants speak the Irish language; and a number of Bronze and Iron Age forts still exist to this day, most notably Dún Aonghasa, clinging to a cliff edge on Inis Mór.
