The optimum diameter size of a tree trunk round should be at least ten inches, wide enough to accommodate one foot. Tree trunk rounds that are smaller than ten inches can be placed with the edges touching to build a solid tree round pathway. The thickness of the tree trunk rounds should be three inches. Three inch thickness gives a solid piece of wood to step on and keeps the tree round light enough to carry. A garden pathway built with tree trunk rounds will be slippery when wet. Add texture to the top of the tree rounds by cross-slicing the tops with a chain saw, hammer and chisel or other implement that will add a rough texture on which a foot can grip. A garden walkway built from untreated tree trunk rounds won't be permanent, it will last between 3-5 years.

We have 5 white pines the utility company is scheduled to cut down. His parents planted them under the wires you see... and they are all tangled. I am planning on moving the raised bed garden to this area. Using the stumps as the edges of the bed, and the 'face' for trellis up rights. They could also be sentinels such as this.
