This would be a very fun activity the first week of school! Teacher says a statement (ex. Switch sides if you like hot dogs more than pizza.) and the students either stay or move. The kids could also talk about why they did/didn't move. Fun back to school ice breaker!
Chicken Sunday by Patricia Polacco (DRA 2.1, K-2 interstest) is about a Russian American Girl who is friends with an African American neighbor. In the story they exchange their cultural traditions (like religion, family, food, etc.) I think this is a great book to celebrate community and friendship. I would use this book in a k-2 setting to teach the importance of friendship aand the value of sharing our diversity with each other.
