Tornado in Namibia. Storms - Severe Weather - Mother Nature
Update: This was labeled as a tornado, but other pinners say it's actually shadow on a sand dune. Older post: Amazing weather. Tornado in Namibia. National Geographic. Several photos
Tornado in the desert of Namibia. When the last of my babies is grown and leaves the nest I plan on indulging a craving for a particular adventure: stormchasing. As long as I can remember I have had dreams about tornados, and while the personal, close-up encounters leave me with a great deal of reverence and cautious respect, they have also imparted an abiding hunger to chase. I always thought it would lead me to a summer adventure in the midwest for a couple of weeks, chasing with a professional storm team. Seeing this photo my horizons have suddenly expanded. I don't know how frequent this occurrence is in a place like Namibia, and it certainly looks a great deal more ominous, but it's inspired a deep curiosity to learn more. Thanks to Jenn Smith for helping me discover the terrible beauty of this unexpected treasure and potential future adventure from photographer Francesco Middei of National Geographic Italia. -- Eve.

So when stressors are triggered or you get into a bad mood, it can unlock a ‘cascade’ of racing negative thoughts that have nothing to do with the original trigger for the bad mood. Saw this photo of Hadrian's Wall in this month's NatGeo. Reminded me of walking between milecastles on the edge of the Roman Empire this summer...
“Hadrian’s Wall, named for the second-century Roman emperor who built it, stretches 73 miles across Britain. It separated the civilized realm of Rome from the ‘barbarians’ — restless Picts in the north. As the Romans withdrew, the northern tribes stormed across the border.”

Some moments can be captured only once in a lifetime and when that moment comes you better hold on to it and make it last by photographing it with your camera. Here is a revision of the most unique moments captured on National Geographic Photos in the past 3 years. A big thanks to all professional photographers that are out there, bringing this kind of beautiful photography into our lives.

NASA Earth Science Observatory Cleveland Volcano on Chuginadak Island in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, produced a huge plume of ash on May 23, 2006. Two hours later, the volcano stopped smoking and the ash cloud completely detached from the summit

Alaskan Aleutian Cleveland Volcano Erupts. Photo taken from the space shuttle.
This photo was taken on May 23, 2006, by flight engineer Jeff Williams on board the International Space Station. This picture shows the ash plume moving west-southwest from the volcano’s summit. A bank of fog (upper right) is a common feature around the Aleutian Islands. The event didn’t last long, since two hours later the plume had disappeared. The Cleveland Volcano erupted again in 2011 in an event described as a “slow effusion of magma” by an expert at the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Recently Discovered World’s Largest Cave, Son Doong, Open to Visitors There are many things that make the Son Doong Cave in Vietnam a remarkable natural wonder; at about 9km in length, 200m in width and 150m in height, it is the largest cave in the world, with caverns capable of fitting entire city streets and skyscrapers. It is home to a river, jungles, and entire cave ecosystems.
Son Doong Cave, Vietnam Currently, the worlds largest cave! Sơn Đoòng cave is a cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Bố Trạch district, Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. Currently the biggest cave in the world, the cave is located near the Laos-Vietnam border It has a large fast-flowing underground river inside. National Geographics Interactive Cave Exploration. Photo: Carsten Peter Caves Affiliate Link National Geographic
The amazing photo featured above was taken in a huge cavern complex within the bowels of central Vietnam – in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. During the spring of 2009, a team of spelunkers began exploring a mountain river cave in Vietnam and discovered a passage carved by a subterranean river millions of years ago. Like a castle on a knoll, a limestone formation shines beneath a skylight in Hang Son Doong Cave. A monsoon storm had just filled the pool in the foreground, signaling that exploring season was ending. Referred to as the "infinite cave" this underground labyrinth is more than 2.5 mi long (4.0 km). Photo taken in May 2009. For more about this incredible cave, see the January 2011 issue of National Geographic Magazine. See also tomorrow’s Earth Science Picture of the Day (Carlsbad Cavern).

Rajan is one of the few elephants in Havelock that can swim, so when he is not dragging timber in the forest he is used as a tourist attraction. The relationship between the Mahout and his elephant usually lasts for their entire lives creating an extremely strong tie between the animal and the human being.

Sunrise Skyline, Bagan Photograph by Cynthia Dial "Known for its more than 4,000 temples in a 26-square-mile space within a dusty, flat plain, the best times to experience the serenity and scope of Bagan are at dawn and dusk. After heading from my hotel's cozy bed and climbing in the dark with my camera and tripod to set up on a ledge of Minyeingone Pagoda, this was my reward—the unlayering of Myanmar's ancient city of temples."
