White silk velvet and mink evening coat by Bruce Oldfield, British, 1986. The tradition of using luxury materials for formalwear remained well in place at the end of the 20th century. Bruce Oldfield designed this evening coat in finest white silk velvet. The coat’s extravagant mink collar is a luxurious addition to a deceptively understated cut, and is an example of the glamorous eveningwear that Oldfield has become known for. Oldfield trained at Ravensbourne College of Art in the early 1970s, launching his own label in 1975. He began designing couture garments in 1978. In 1980, he was awarded the OBE for his services to the fashion industry.
