For author Kenneth H. Thompson, childhood was anything but idyllic. In his memoir, he chronicles his life story and the lessons he learned in the process. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up with two brothers and two sisters, but he suffered abuse at the hands of his step-father.

This sculptural Christmas tree is made from driftwood harvested on the beaches of the French Riviera.

We saw one similar - in Tofino on Vancouver Island - it had a bit more substance having been made from larger pieces of driftwood. This one looks almost ephemeral.

Interesting! Ours was a tabletop type-about 3 feet tall or so, meant to be a centerpiece or set on a side table, etc. Was the one you saw full-size, in other words, real tree size, like a Christmas tree? I've never been to Vancouver (I'm assuming that's where Vancouver Island is?) but there's a festival in Italy (I've only seen the one in the Tuscany region, while living in Livorno (my dad was stationed at Camp Darby, a US Army base near Pisa). They have eggs full of confetti as part of their Carnivale...very similar to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, LA. If you're out after dark, or on a weekend, you're likely to get an egg in the face or other areas of your body, full of confetti-you hope! Some of the drunker partiers were known to use eggs with their original contents, or other not-so-nice stuff. I think it's intriguing that a "pagan" custom adopted by the Christian church in Europe as part of the Easter celebration should spread to so many places, always with eggs as a part of it

The tree I saw was bout 4 or 5 feet high in the little beach town of Tofino, It sat outside a shop there. Vancouver Island is the large island (460 km by 80 km) off the south west coast of Canada and is a 2 hour ferry ride from Vancouver. It's very beautiful and is a popular tourist destination.
