Capturing Thailand's Healing Powers

by Lisa Limer
Lisa Limer photographs Chiang Mai and its surrounding areas of northern Thailand. She captures thai massage in action, the Padaung people, monks at work at Buddhist temples, and the beautiful grounds of the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi and Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai.

A young Padaung girl at Baan Tong Luang, a “cultural preservation” village outside Chiang Mai. The Karen people or Padaung people have ancient myths about the rings that women have always wore in their neck. Some of those myths explain that the rings were needed for preventing a woman from being bitten by tigers or to make women ugly in order to prevent them from being captured by slave traders. However the myth mostly known is that women's rings were thought to bring great beauty and husbands

Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, Thailand. 2008. This is up a steep, winding road (basically single-lane) road, followed by many, many stairs. Absolutely beautiful!
