A colourized photo of Union troops during the #CivilWar. The one in the front with the dog is George Armstrong Custer
George Armstrong Custer (December 5, 1839 – June 25, 1876) was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. Raised in Michigan and Ohio, Custer was admitted to West Point in 1858, where he graduated last in his class. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Custer was called to serve with the Union Army. Custer developed a strong reputation during the Civil War. He fought in the first major engagement, the First Battle of Bull Run. His association with several important officers helped his career, as did his success as a highly effective cavalry commander. Custer was eventually promoted to the temporary rank (brevet) of major general and promoted major general of Volunteers. (At war's end, he reverted to his permanent rank of captain.) At the conclusion of the Appomattox Campaign, in which he and his troops played a decisive role, Custer was present at General Robert E. Lee's surrender. After the Civil War, Custer was dispatched to the west to fight in the American Indian Wars and appointed lieutenant colonel of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment where he and all his men were killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 fighting against a coalition of Native American tribes. The battle is popularly known in American history as "Custer's Last Stand." Custer and his men were defeated so decisively in this battle that the Battle of the Little Bighorn has overshadowed all his prior achievements.

The "Crannell Giant", a redwood tree, is thought to have been the largest living organism on Earth before it was logged in 1926.

Here's a photo of the Crannell Creek Giant Coast Redwood, aka Maple Creek Tree, documented as about 15% larger than General Sherman. Maple Creek Tree was over 60,000 cubic feet, vs. Gen. Sherman's 52,000 cubic feet. Another Coast Redwood Lindsey Creek Tree was nearly 90,000 cubic feet, literally blowing away any known Sequoiadendrons of the Sierra Nevada seen today for size and wood volume. Lindsey was practically 80% bigger than Gen. Sherman. More info>>>> www.mdvaden.com/grove_of_titans.shtml

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links San Francisco to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States.

This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning god..., re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face.... -Walt Whitman

Odin got a camera for his 5th birthday. We spent the entire day taking pictures of everything we found. Mr Landsvik destroyed the camera the next day, because it wasn't constructive. When Mor found out she bought me a camera, and Odin and I played with it when he came to visit. She framed most of his pictures.

Ernst Haeckel and his assistant in the Canaries, 1866. Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (February 16, 1834 – August 9, 1919), also written von Haeckel, was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, stem cell, and the kingdom Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany and developed the controversial recapitulation theory ("ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny") claiming that an individual organism's biological development, or ontogeny, parallels and summarizes its species' evolutionary development, or phylogeny.
