Dot painters are wonderful for young toddlers not yet proficient with paint brushes - you'll see them all over good day cares/preschools. $15

Cutting is a big thing for toddlers, and amazingly effective at killing time. Love that these are safe, include both straight and zig-zag sets and can be used with either hand (we have a lefty). These are a favorite of ours. $5

These can be a little tough for really young kids to handle but my 3 year old goes crazy for them. 3D washable glitter paint pens $5

Good set of dough and clay tools, I've seen them in lots of preschools. These were easier for my daughter to use when she was under two than the traditional pay-doh tools. $7

We went overboard researching the perfect play-doh set last Christmas. Settled on this one and the toddlers love it (so do their big kid friends). Comes in an easy to carry and store barrel. $21

Classic crayon set for bigger kids - washable! Crayola 24ct Washable Crayons $5

Got these for Christmas last year - easy for even 1 year olds to hold. Fun, textural alternative to standard paint brushes or finger painting. $10

Used these finger paints with both kids as babies and toddlers. Prefer these squeezable tubes to pots you dip your fingers in because it's much easier to control portion size (and the mess). Washable and not very saturated color. Very easy to clean up and off of surfaces. Crayola 4ct Washable Fingerpaints $8

A step up from standard crayons. The bright blend-able colors and smooth texture make kids feel like "real" artists. Crayola 28ct Colored Oil Pastel Sticks $4

We haven't tried these yet but I'm really intrigued. Good reviews on Amazon, one wrote "a second color can be layered over the first and then blended by the wet brush with great results". Sounds cool! Crayola 24ct Watercolor Colored Pencils $8
