Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. When my mom found this volunteering in my sister's elementary school library, she brought it home and began reading selections to the family. We ended up reading the whole book before we even considered dinner.

One of my favorite books. Amazing author. Poetry by Shel Silverstein Come in . . . for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.

"some books are meant / to be read just like this / alone, with the evening, / a bowl of fruit ripening / waiting for the reader / to grow hungry, but / she won't, the book / will devour her, / and it / will soon / become / morning."

perhaps the greatest children's book ever...and I think it's actually for adults
