In May 1945 Private Murray (Australia) was one of only 30 PWs still alive at Ranau. He and Pte Keith Botterill stole rice from the Japanese to build up food stocks as they intended to escape. When the theft was discovered Pte Murray stepped forward to take responsibility, knowing he would be killed. He was bayonetted and his body thrown into a bomb crater at Ranau on 20 May. Pte Murray sacrificed his life to save his friend. Botterill did escape, one of 6 survivors of the Sandakan death…

He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north .

Irena Sendlerowa: A phenomenal woman and member of Zegota, a secret organization dedicating to rescuing Polish Jews. She handed out money and clothes, and smuggled children to safety through sewers. She bribed her way out of execution and later was honored by the Polish government for "rescuing the most defenseless victims of Nazi ideology" (children) and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Irena Sendler got permission to work in a Warsaw Ghetto as a plumber. She courageously smuggled babies in her tool box and carried larger children in a sack. She trained her dog to bark when Nazis were near. She saved 2500 children.
