Following his father's death from a brain hemorrhage in January 1886, a number of events contributed to Lenin's radicalization. In May 1887 (when Lenin was 17 years old), his eldest brother Aleksandr Ulyanov was hanged for participating in an assassination attempt against the Tsar, Alexander III (1881–94). Nicholas, his wife and family were transferred to Tobolsk in Western Siberia then, in April 1918, taken to Yekaterinburg in the Urals. It was here, on the orders of the Bolshevik leader, Vladimir Lenin, during the night of 16/17 July 1918, the family was shot dead. (Nicholas’ brother, the Grand Duke Michael, was later arrested by the Bolsheviks, detained, then murdered on 13 July 1918).

Bell would have been known to history simply as Alexander Bell, but he was highly jealous of his brothers’ middle names and asked for and received one for his 11th birthday. His interest in acoustics developed during his childhood through his experiences with his deaf mother, influencing his later work with the deaf and experimentation with sound.
