Nicholas, his wife and family were transferred to Tobolsk in Western Siberia then, in April 1918, taken to Yekaterinburg in the Urals. It was here, on the orders of the Bolshevik leader, Vladimir Lenin, during the night of 16/17 July 1918, the family was shot dead. (Nicholas’ brother, the Grand Duke Michael, was later arrested by the Bolsheviks, detained, then murdered on 13 July 1918).

Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), inventor of the telephone. Bell would have been known to history simply as Alexander Bell, but he was highly jealous of his brothers’ middle names and asked for and received one for his 11th birthday. His interest in acoustics developed during his childhood through his experiences with his deaf mother, influencing his later work with the deaf and experimentation with sound.

Alexei was always accompanied by one of his sisters. The czar had a rare blood disorder ( hemophilia ) that made him very fragile. But the family was always very very close to begin with.
