A 4-year search ended in 1937 when monks identified B'stan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho, age 2, as Tibet's next spiritual ruler. In 1940, the boy was installed as Dalai Lama (the 14th since 1391). He was 15 when China overran his kingdom. The Dalai Lama escaped into exile in 1959; in 1989, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his gentle campaign to win freedom for his homeland.
