Happy Birthday to Classic Movie Legend, James Cagney, born today, July 17 in 1899! Triple threat: Singer. Dancer. Actor. Once a staple in the Hollywood lexicon of classic stars — the ability to sing, dance, & act is sadly no longer pivotal for Blockbuster stars of today. Our birthday boy, James Cagney was the very definition of a triple threat. Although most notably remembered as a Warner Brothers’ gangster, Cagney’s ability to belt a tune or tap his feet was on par with...

The Flapper Era - Hip flasks of hooch, jazz, speakeasies bobbed hair, 'the lost generation.' The Twenties are endlessly fascinating. It was the first truly modern decade and, for better or worse, it created the model for society that all the world follows today." (from Kevin Rayburn, "Two Views of the 1920s.")

Vintage model wearing the latest Gibson Girl fashion which was popular between 1898-1918.
Camille Clifford (1885-1971) was a Belgian-born stage actress and the most famous model for the "Gibson Girl" illustrations. Her towering coiffure and hourglass figure defined the Gibson Girl style. In the early 1900s she won $ 2000 in a magazine contest sponsored by illustrator Charles Dana Gibson to find a living version of his Gibson Girl drawings: his ideal woman. Her trademark style was a long, elegant gown wrapped around her tightly corseted, eighteen-inch wasp waist. A Gibson Girl. The Gibson Girl was the personification of the feminine ideal of beauty portrayed by the satirical pen-and-ink illustrations of illustrator Charles Dana Gibson during a 20-year period that spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in the United States. Some people argue that the Gibson Girl was the first national beauty standard for American women. Gibson's fictional images of her published in newpapers and magazines during the Belle Époque were extremely popular.
Edwardian Style Dresses for Women | Edwardian Fashion – The Gibson Girl
Edwardian Fashion – The Gibson Girl became the first 20th century standard of female beauty and style, named after Charles Dana Gibson, a Life Magazine illustrator whose fanciful illustrations inadvertently created a new idealized style of Edwardian Fashion. Pictured here is Camille Clifford - whose famous corseted waist caused such a stir. This type of severe S-bend silhouette disappeared from vogue quite quickly by 1910.
Camile Clifford who inspired Charles Dana Gibson and his Gibson girls' illustrations.
