The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is a historical building located about 30 km northwest of Aleppo, Syria. It is the oldest surviving Byzantine church, dating back to the 5th century. Built on the site of the pillar of St. Simeon Stylites, a famed hermit monk, the church is popularly known as either Qalaat Semaan, the 'Fortress of Simeon', or Deir Semaan, the 'Monastery of Simeon'.

Syria - Nabk region -the monastery of saint Moses the Ethiopian .It set on a cliff within the kalamoon mountains which form part of the Lebanon Syria natural border. It has been restored to some extent and become a pilgrimage destination before 2011 war. Father Paolo who brought the monastery back to life has stepped into the political tension of the war .Later he lost his life when he gone to Raka city in midland Syria thinking of establishing a dialogue with ISIS.

Monastery of Saint Moses the Abyssinian where we spent several days tending the garden, milking the goats and meditating in the most spiritual place I have been so far.
Ancient Monastery In The Middle Of 'Syria's Stonehenge' - In the mountains of the Syrian desert - covered with with unknown rock formations, stone circles and mysterious lines of stone - there is an ancient monastery with ancient tombs, corridors and walls covered with frescoes. Located 90km north of Damascus, the monastery is named after St. Moses the Abyssinian - Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi.
Visit Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi --- This Catholic monastery was built during the Byzantine Period. It is located on a mountain, and it takes a 30-minute walk up a narrow stairway to reach it. Deir Mar Musa also features 800-year-old frescoes.

Mar Musa al-Habashi, Syria not really within the scope of this board but this would make have made an ideal fortified position during the crusades. This is actually still an active monastry- the Monastry of Saint Moses the Abyssinian.

Damascus, Syria. I wish it was safe to travel here. I hate what's happened to this beautiful, ancient country!
مسكيه Miskieh Damascus, Syria Once the West entrance to the temple of Jupiter where later in the 1960s school children like myself shopped for school books and pencils. No one ever told us this was Aramaic ( Haddad) or later Roman.
Damascus, Syria. Here is where I will wander ancient streets and think about all the history around me. But I will make friends there among the ladies, and together we will marvel at the architecture and giggle about things beneath our veils and go shopping in the market and barter with the sellers.
