Tonight's Friday Nite Frolic movie suggestion is "Tampopo" http://tastyflix.com/?p=67 The ultimate food movie that covers it all; from classic French to Noodles to Real Food Porn… Intermixed with this story are various vignettes about love, lust and food. - Chef Bradley Borchardt
Tampopo (1985): A truck driver stops at a small family run noodle shop and decides to help their fledgling business.
Tampopo (1987) At the heart of this film is a young widow named Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), who is struggling to make ends meet by running a noodle restaurant. Goro (Tsutomu Yamazaki), a truck driver, saves Tampopo's young son from being beaten by a group of school girls and is rewarded with a bowl of very bad ramen (noodles). Goro tells Tampopo the awful truth about her cooking and she asks for his help. Together they search for the perfect ramen recipe.

Departures (2008). This is a very Japanese film about death and forgiveness. I remember the reviews being mixed, and it was often accused of being too slow and overly sentimental. I found it incredibly powerful and beautiful, perhaps because I'm used to the feel and pacing of Japanese movies. Either way, real tear jerker. And I rarely cry at the movies.
Departures ("Okuribito" Japanese title) One of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Beautiful landscapes, amazing cinematography, moving story, enchanting music.... you'll love it.
Departures (2008) "Okuribito" (original title) - A newly unemployed cellist takes a job preparing the dead for funerals. Director: Yôjirô Takita Writer: Kundô Koyama Stars: Masahiro Motoki, Ryôko Hirosue, Tsutomu Yamazaki
Departures ... 2009 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film. Off-beat comedy-drama, about an out of work cellist from a dis-banded orchestra applying for work at what he thought was a travel agency and finding out it's actually for a funeral professional position ... also a high rating from IMDb.

Yes, I know it's the movie poster, and the movie is great, but you know what this book is? A better guide for women than Twilight or 50 Shades of Grey. Seriously, ladies, you have control of your own lives, get married for love, stay home if it's your safe place, go adventure if your soul moves you, and don't settle for anything less than what you want. Boom!

Little Women is my favorite movie. Period. First of all, it's a beautiful film and everyone is well-cast (how annoying is young Kirsten Dunst?). Winona Ryder is the most convincing and compelling Jo. You can feel time passing as you watch the film including seasons, times of war, times of peace, and the anxiety of not wanting things to change too much as you grow older. Plus, Baby Christian Bale.

1980 The Gods Must Be Crazy this movie was delightful.. Highly recommended. In South Africa I stood at the place where in the movie the actors threw the coke bottle into the enormous ravine below. gorgeous. i love this movie so much, and part 2 also
The God's Must Be Crazy (1980) I heard this was very funny. Three vignettes highlight the surreal in this cult comedy, including a tale about a Coke bottle that falls from the sky and becomes a one-of-a-kind object coveted by everyone in a small African village. N!xau, Marius Weyers, Sandra Prinsloo...TS comedy
Fantastic funny movies (South-Africa) Kalahari bushman Xi (played by genuine bushman N!xau) is as surprised as the rest of his tibe when a Coke bottle, thrown from a passing plane, lands in the middle of their village. This "gift from the gods" proves to be a mixed blessing when the tribesmen fight over it and eventually use it for a weapon. To keep peace in the village, Xi is assigned to take the bottle to "the end of the earth" (actually a lush valley) and throw it back to the gods

2046 (2004) Directed by Kar Wai Wong. With Tony Chiu Wai Leung, Ziyi Zhang, Faye Wong, Li Gong. The women who enter a science fiction author's life, over the course of a few years, after the author loses the woman he considers his one true love.
Movie 14/50: 2046 (2004). My rating: 2/5. I think the main thing that prevented me from being interested is a lack of empathy for the main character. So many women fell head over heels for him, but why? He was emotionally distant and had that disingenuous smile the whole way through. It's no wonder the film worked out the way that it did. It got a little more interesting towards the end, but as a whole I found it both dull and uncomfortable.
