From Newberry Award winning Rebecca Stead. A fresh new twist on the story about the boy having a difficult time of things at home and at school. Read the review at Book Smugglers: http://thebooksmugglers.com/2012/08/book-review-liar-spy-by-rebecca-stead.html
A seventh-grade boy who is coping with social and economic issues moves into a new apartment building, where he makes friends with an over-imaginative home-schooled boy and his eccentric family. Ages 10-14.
Georges has just moved from his beloved house to a Brooklyn apartment building because his father lost his job. Though the apartment is only 12 blocks from his old home, it's in a completely new universe as mysterious to Georges as the woods in a Brothers Grimm tale. It's full of new smells and strange but lovable characters.
Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead. Georges’ dad was laid off so his Mom has started working extra shifts, and they had to sell their house and move into an apartment. One good thing about the new building is Safer, an unusual boy who lives on the top floor and is determined to teach Georges how to be a spy.
When seventh grader Georges (the S is silent) moves into a Brooklyn apartment building, he meets Safer, a twelve-year-old coffee-drinking loner and self-appointed spy. Georges becomes Safer's first spy recruit. His assignment? Tracking the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs.
Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead. Seventh-grader Georges adjusts to moving from a house to an apartment, his father's efforts to start a new business, his mother's extra shifts as a nurse, being picked on at school, and Safer, a boy who wants his help spying on another resident of their building.
Seventh grader Georges moves into a Brooklyn apartment building and meets Safer, a twelve-year-old self-appointed spy. Georges becomes Safer's first spy recruit. His assignment? Tracking the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs. But as Safer becomes more demanding, Georges starts to wonder: what is a lie, and what is a game? How far is too far to go for your only friend? Like the dazzling When You Reach Me, Liar & Spy will keep readers guessing until the end.
Mystery. One of 2012's outstanding books per the NPR Backseat Book Club.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli - Leo Borlock follows the unspoken rule at Mica Area High School: don't stand out--under any circumstances! Then Stargirl arrives at Mica High and everything changes--for Leo and for the entire school.
"She was bendable light: she shone around every corner of my day. She taught me to revel. She taught me to wonder. She taught me to laugh. My sense of humor had always measured up to everyone else's; but timid introverted me, I showed it sparingly: I was a smiler. In her presence I threw back my head and laughed out loud for the first time in my life” ― Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl
Stargirl. One of the best reads of my high school experience. For anyone who ever felt different.. aka... everyone.

Jerry Spinelli – Stargirl (In a moving and highly engaging tale about the vagaries of adolescent peer pressure, Newbery Medal winner Jerry Spinelli tells the story of Stargirl, a high school student who is startlingly different from everyone else. The need to conform -- and unabashed curiosity about those who don't -- are at the heart of this touching tale, which aptly demonstrates the peaks and pitfalls of popularity.)

During the summer after her sophomore year, Deanna Lambert tries to come to terms with the reputation with which she was slapped in the eighth grade when she was caught by her father in the backseat of a car with a high school senior, and struggles with her still-strained relationship with her father and her changing feelings for her best friend, Jason.

Loser An amazing book about a boy named Zinkoff. The perfect read aloud for 5th grade and up. My students immediately were engaged in the book and it has a wonderful message. Extremely well written.
Great book for sixth grade students. It reminds them to look at who a person is instead of how they look or even act.
This is a realistic fiction novel good for intermediate grade levels. This is a story about a young boy who s bullied and called a loser, but he is too busy keeping up with everything to notice.
One of my favorite chapter books to read to kids. Lots of great messages, especially about acceptance.
This realistic fiction chapter book tells the story of a boy, Donald, who was nicknamed "loser" because of his unique qualities. However, this soon changes when he becomes the hero of the neighborhood. This book is perfect for fifth graders. It tracks Donald from first to sixth grade, so they will be able to relate to at least one stage in Donald's life. This book will teach students the importance of being themselves, no matter what.
The Best Classroom Book List Ever | Scholastic.com
This is a great book, especially if you like those "things-aren't-always-as-they-seem" versions of fairy tales. Like Elphaba in "Wicked", those who we have always thought of as the "bad guy" are not always as evil as they seem while the "good guys" have their negative qualities about them. Lots of twists and turns in developing the characters of the stepsisters, the stepmother (who reallly is kind of wicked in my opinion...), Clara (Cinderella), the Prince, etc.
We have all heard the story of Cinderella, the beautiful child cast out to slave among the ashes. But what of her stepsisters, the homely pair exiled into ignominy by the fame of their lovely sibling? What fate befell those untouched by beauty ... and what curses accompanied Cinderella's looks?
