Affenpinschers are German in origin and date back to the seventeenth century. Its name is derived from the German Affe (ape, monkey). The breed predates and is ancestral to the Griffon Bruxellois (Brussels Griffon) and Miniature Schnauzer.
Caption that accompanied this picture in the Feb. issue of LIFE: “The ‘monkey terrier’ comes from Germany where it was bred 300 years ago as a rat catcher. Bushy-faced with an underslung chin, the toy sized dog has a fiery, excitable disposition.
The Affenpinscher is thought to be one of the oldest toy Dog breeds, appearing in Germany during the century. Although the Affenpinscher then was bigger than the Dog we know today, it is thought that the ancestors of these Dogs were around much earlier.
