“It took me 30 years to get the best shot of my life,” says Hawaiian surf photographer Bielmann, referring to this photo, taken in August 2011, of California surfer Nathan Fletcher at the bottom of a 30-foot wave at Teahupoo, Tahiti’s most famous break
Now, this is an incredible photo: Brian Bielmann captured Nathan Fletcher moments before obliteration at Teahupoo during last year's Code Red swell. Fletcher subsequently picked up the gong for 'Ride Of The Year' and 'Monster Tube' at the 2012 Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards held this evening.

Nathan Fletcher rides what is believed to be the heaviest wave ever ridden in Tahiti. Nathan was towed into this wave at the break called Teahupoo by a jetski. He rode the wave all the way to the end. Moments after this shot was taken he was swallowed up by the monster wave. Later Nathan said, after this violent wipeout, he felt to see if his head was still attached to his body.
