Speeding bullet. Owl's faces are round because the dish-like shape helps direct sound waves to their ears. Which btw, are placed at different locations on their head (one ear's low, the other high) to better help determined the location of prey.

The program was a production of the Grandes y Pequeños literacy project, a semifinalist in the Team Up Challenge which is an annual competition of Silver & Black Give Back that supports service-learning projects that benefit communities. For a special group of West Side kids, high school students and senior citizens, an innovative poetry program is providing a cultural link that bridges the generational divide. Lanier High School students teach poetry and perform mariachi music, while seniors from the Good Samaritan Center and preschool students from Carvajal Early Education Center write poems and perform creative musical numbers of their own. The San Antonio ISD project is a finalist for Spurs Sports and Entertainment’s Team Up Challenge grant, a $20,000 award that falls under the Silver and Black Give Back charity umbrella. “As the event evolved, the seniors were interested in learning poetry, and suddenly we were helping them more than they were helping us,” she added. “I started rapping (a few years ago), and I just realized how much it shares with poetry,” said Govina, who draws on big-picture issues such as American corruption for source material.

The Other Rosa Parks: Now 73, Claudette Colvin Was First to Refuse Giving Up Seat on Montgomery Bus - YouTube

Nine months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin did the same thing. Over on Democracy Now!, Colvin gives a rare interview about her story. Rosa Parks biographer Jeanne Theoharis joined in and discussed how it might have helped set the stage for Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott.

Nine months before Rosa Parks’ historic action, a 15-year-old teenager named Claudette Colvin did the very same thing. She was arrested, and her case led to the U.S. Supreme Court’s order for the desegregation of Alabama’s bus system.

Claudette Colvin was only age 15 when she was arrested and sent to adult jail for defying bus segregation in Montgomery. This event happened nine months before Rosa Parks' arrest, making Colvin the first African American to be sent to jail for rallying against bus segregation laws. http://atlantablackstar.com/2014/02/23/10-black-heroes-who-usually-go-unrecognized-during-black-history-month-but-shouldnt/4/

She was arrested, and her case led to the U.S. Supreme Court’s order for the desegregation of Alabama’s bus system. Now 73, Claudette Colvin joins us for a rare interview along with Brooklyn College Professor Jeanne Theoharis, author of "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks." Theoharis says Parks’ act of defiance may not have happened if not for Colvin’s nine months before. Colvin says learning about African-American history in school inspired her act. "I could not move, because history had me glued to the seat," she recalls telling the bus driver and the police officer who came to arrest her. "It felt like Sojourner Truth’s hands were pushing me down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman’s hands were pushing me down on another shoulder." [includes rush transcript]

A group of Georgia high school students are making history by challenging the segregation of their high school prom. Thanks to their efforts and the support of groups like the NAACP, Wilcox County High will hold its first-ever integrated prom this Saturday, nearly 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education desegregated the nation’s school system. In the past, the proms have been organized by private groups, and parents behind the "white prom" have refused to let African-American students attend. Local officials say the segregated prom has continued because it is organized privately, out of the school district’s control. News of the case spread quickly over social media, fueling support and donations for an integrated prom from as far away as Australia and South Korea. We speak with two of the students who are helping to organize the integrated prom: Mareshia Rucker and Brandon Davis. We also speak to Mareshia’s mother, Toni Rucker, who encouraged her daughter’s efforts. In addition, we air an excerpt from a recent interview with Carlotta Walls LaNier, who was 14 years old when she became one of the "Little Rock Nine" who integrated Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957.

Louder Than a Bomb (2010)

This movie is amazing! These students are amazing! It's one of my new favorite "background movies" - these are movies that I play in the background while I do mind numbing things like color big books or grade math tests!

Louder Than a Bomb tells the story of four Chicago high school poetry teams as they prepare to compete in the world's largest youth slam. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the film captures the turbulent lives of these unforgettable kids, exploring the ways writing shapes their world, and vice versa. Louder Than a Bomb is not about "high school poetry" as we often think of it. It's about language as a joyful release, irrepressibly talented teenagers obsessed with making words dance.

Louder Than A Bomb is an award-winning feature-length documentary about a high school poetry slam competition, by Siskel/Jacobs Productions.
