Cadillac Eldorado 1948. This is the very beginning of tail fins, introduced by design director Harley Earl and inspired by the P-51D Mustang fighter plane from World War II. Fins began on GM's Cadillac brand, on this car, and trickled down from there to span the rest of GM's car lines. Other brands soon caught on, and they peaked in 1959 before everyone realized they were frankly ridiculous.
