#### We are working really hard on standard and non-standard units of measure! I like to introduce them to Mr. and Mrs. Measurement and tell a story about each of them {I googled the images for the tools though...I don't have that clipart}: Mrs. Measurement is standard. This means that she has only certain tools that she uses. She is a model in measurement. She never makes mistakes because she is very careful to use the correct tool to measure exactly. She measures with timers, calendars, yardsticks rulers, measuring cups, scales, and even a thermometer. She is always right! Mr. Measurement is non-standard. This means that he uses ANYTHING to measure with. Sometimes he uses materials that may not be what you would imagine. He can measure with his arm, finger, blocks, yarn, and can even measure with his hands like a make-believe balance. Even though it sounds silly, his non-standard methods work! Today, we had some extra time after our assembly and so I did a little review activity with them. They wrote 2 sentences telling about Mr. and Mrs. Measurement and made a picture of what they thought they should look like: Click {here} for that freebie! We also will be working in our Measurement Books tomorrow {recording non-standard and standard ways of measuring time, capacity, length, temperature, and weight}: Click {here} for that freebie! ********************************** Oh and we get to do this one {it's a favorite} on Monday: I had my kiddos travel around the classrooms in pairs, looking for a candy bar they'd like to measure {I had 2 of each candy bard and about 10 different kinds}. They first talk about how many inches the bar might be (estimate), then they take turns measuring it, marking it on their paper, and recording the name of the bar and the inches. Click {here} for that freebie! And last but not least, guess what's in my math tubs? The most fabulous activities from Amy Lemons! I'm loving her Measurement Unit SO MUCH!!! Check it out {here}! #### In Kindergarten, our kiddos learn their “Friends of Ten“. In other words, they learn all the combinations that make ten (ex., 2 + 8, 3 + 7, etc.). Why, because the entire time we're thinking, "why can't we just eat the jelly beans, why must we count the colours" its like putting a cake on the table and giving us a plate full of stuff we don't enjoy! Why are you giving us a present, but making us wait to eat it by "counting" it first!!!!!!!!!! :(((((((((((( Brings the mood down, honestly!

#### Bears Beware. by Patricia Reilly Giff, illustrated by Alasdair Bright. April 10, 2012. Wendy Lamb Books. 80 pages. ISBN: 9780385738897. Bears Beware is the fifth book in the Zigzag Kids series. This time, the Zigzag Afternoon Center plans a camping trip for all the kids, which troubles Mitchell. He's worried about sleeping outside with lots of bugs and wild animals all around. Still, since his best friend Habib will be there, he figures he will be safe. When they arrive, however, he doesn't get to be partners with Habib for the nature hunt - and worse yet, the tent pole for the boys' tent gets broken! Will Mitchell survive a night in the woods, or will he be forced to face the bears he fears? As much I loved Patricia Reilly Giff's Polk Street School books as a kid, the Zigzag Kids books don't speak to me in the same way. I don't find myself getting inside the characters' heads as much, and their experiences don't ring as true as the ordinary events that happened at Polk Street School. Though I think the idea of camping is interesting to young readers, I didn't feel as though this book captured the excitement kids might experience on such a trip. Mitchell's fears, too, are likely shared by many real kids his age, but reading about them wasn't as interesting or as fresh as I might have expected. The illustrations perfectly match the characters, however, and they do a wonderful job of portraying their diversity in terms of age, race, and appearance. The visual guide at the start of the book is especially useful in keeping track of the large cast, especially since there isn't much description in the text, and the narrator changes with each book. Overall, I think Giff has created a very 21st century series that reflects the reality for a lot of kids who don't go home after school, but instead visit a center or program. I don't know of many other books set in such a program, so these books fill a real gap on libraries' chapter book shelves. Giff also has a knack for understanding the struggles of elementary schoolers and bringing them to life through interesting characters. While this series doesn't really thrill me like Giff's other works, chapter book readers who love realistic fiction and school stories will have no problem falling in love with Mitchell and his friends. I received a digital ARC of Bears Beware from Random House via NetGalley. For more about this book, visit Goodreads and Worldcat.

#### Inch by Inch [Leo Lionni] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In this classic book, a winsome, winning inchworm is proud of his ability to measure anything under the sun.

#### I'm a bit behind on this series because our son, daughter-in-law, and grandbabies who live in Tanzania arrived in the states last week for a visit. Oh, and we had a booth selling crafts made there by Holly and her Tanzanian friend Suzy at the local Arts and Craft Fair for three days...a busy and joyful week! Today I want to share a book by one of my favorite authors, Leo Lionni. Having taught high school for 25 years, I came late to his wonderful writing, learning to love it during the 7 years I taught elementary ESL. Inch by Inch was the first of Lionni's books to win the Caldecott Honor, with three more following. It's a fantastic book for integrating measurement skills; Scholastic has a lesson plan on this page. Not only is the prose wonderful; his illustrations are as well. The iconic Horn Book Magazine praises the book's “...lovely colors...sharp definition of cutouts against white space...rhythm of the composition...simplicity of the whole...” Weston Woods produced an animated version of the book in 2006, which costs $59.95, but ArtsEdge has a story performance, by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, online and FREE! You and your young friends can read more about Leo on Random House's website, which provides tons of information for an author study - seven short chapters and an essay written by his granddaughter Annie Lionni. Your students can also watch him explain why he writes books about animals in a short video, see how he makes a paper mouse(and try one themselves) here, learn about his childhood and his imagination in this video, see many pictures, including one of him playing his accordion! I have other favorite Lionni books (he wrote 40!) that I'll share later, but in the meantime, please let Inch by Inch and Leo's personal story help cure your Common Core blues. I hope you're having a happy Thanksgiving week; many blessings from my family to yours!

#### Don't you just love it when you have an idea and after a couple of fails, you figure out how to do it?(sort of) When my first graders study nonstandard measurement, I like to read them Leo Lionni's Inch by Inch. In the past, I had pictures of the animals in the book and "inchworm" rulers for them to measure with. This year though, I wanted to try to amp it up a bit with the iPads. I wanted them to use stickers of some kind to measure a picture. I started off with the Doodle Buddy app, thinking they could draw the picture and then use the stamps provided in the app to measure. The problem I ran into with this app was that I could not figure out how to move the stamps once I put them on the page. Plan B: Try it in my old, trusty, go-to PicCollage. Are there stamps? No, but there are "stickers". Could I move them? Yes and resize them! Could I copy them once I had a good size? Yes, by double tapping on the sticker. So after reading the book. I had the kids take pictures of each other from head to toe. Then I walked them through getting their picture into PicCollage and showed them the features of the stickers. For an added bonus, I had them add text. Here are a few of the finished products. Are they perfect? No, but the kids got the idea that the stickers had to be stacked end to end and don't you love that Penny is 3 and a half arrows tall? How have you made a paper/pencil activity iPadable?
