    Rail Fence and Nine Patch - interesting setting. If you used the same color backgrounds it wouldn't look like a snowball and the X would be the focus. For a kids quilt I'd use a white background and scrappy brights for the nine patch and rail fence.

nine patch string blocks...if you do the center strips the same color it looks like sashing when the blocks are put together
