A racist sign on a beach in Durban under the South African apartheid laws (1989). The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws. 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

HOW FAR WE HAVE COME!!! Apartheid is an afrikaans word meaning "seperateness" - it was a legal system whereby people were classified into racial groups - White, Black, Indian and Coloured; and seperate geographic areas were demarcated for each racial group. Apartheid laws were part of South Africa's legal framework from 1948 to 1994.
June 17th, 1991, South Africa’s Apartheid laws were repealed. For almost 350 years, Black people in South Africa had been subject to exceedingly unjust laws designed, firstly to subjugate them and incorporate their lands into the British Empire, and secondly to turn them in labour reserves that ensured privilege to a White minority.
Apartheid: Laws that used to be in S. Africa that physically separated different areas into different geographical locations
Africa's "Jim Crow", Apartheid Date: Fri, 1950-07-07 *On this date in 1950, the Population Registration Act No 30 of 1950 began in South Africa; the beginning of South African Apartheid. This law required people to be identified and registered from birth as one of four distinct racial groups: White, Colored, Bantu (Black African), and other. It was one of the 'pillars' of Apartheid. Race was reflected in the individual's Identity Number.
Apartheid was implemented in 1948 after the nation became independent from Great Britain. It was a legal system that institutionalized the separation of races and white dominance in economic and political affairs. The government banned intermarriage between races required people to be classified as white, black or colored, a classification for other races and people who were mixed-race. Blacks were required to carry permits when entering white neighborhoods.

The purpose of apartheid in South Africa was to separate not only the whites from the nonwhites, but also the nonwhites from each other. The “nonwhites” consisted of coloureds (people of mixed black, Malayan, and white descent) and Asian populations. This was caused by the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948 that stated the prohibition of marriage between non-whites and whites. The Population Registration Act in 1950 required that all South Africans be racially grouped into three categories.
