Wat Mahathat, Ayuthaya, Thailand - Hundreds of Buddha statues were beheaded by the Burmese during their invasion in AD 1767. Ayuthaya was demolished and burned to the ground. Legend has it that the Buddha head in this picture was put in this orientation and encased by the tree roots, a bodhi fig tree. This is a powerful image for Buddhists because Buddha himself is thought to have achieved parinirvana under a fig tree.

not sure this tree ever had snowy branches...but i love this poem anyway!! : A tree whose hungry mouth is prest, against the earth's sweet flowing breast. A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray. A tree that may in summer wear a nest of robin's in her hair. Upon whose bosom snow has lain and intimately lives with rain... ~ Joyce Kilmer
